The Week: 2/18 - 2/21

One of our crew played hooky for two days with the Discovery Channel crew, filming a documentary on Sasquatch.  He brought back this HUGE foot print casting.  Since most of us hadn't seen a casting made, we had to make a "Little Foot" of our own, and one brave student sacrificed his once clean foot.  Quite a difference between the two!

Emergency Crews Attempt To Rescue Olympic Figure Skater Who Fell Through Ice

SPORTS NEWS IN BRIEF • Sports • Olympics • ISSUE 50•07 • Feb 19, 2014
SOCHI, RUSSIA—In a race against time, local emergency crews reportedly rushed to rescue Italian figure skater Carolina Kostner Wednesday after the Olympian plunged through a hazardous thin patch of ice during her short program at the Iceberg Skating Palace. “Unfortunately she skated way out into the middle of the rink where the ice was weak and it collapsed instantly when she landed her triple axel,” said rescue worker Ignativ Barkov, adding that Kostner ignored the sounds of cracking ice while performing an otherwise flawless step sequence and combination spin. “We have to act fast or she’ll succumb to hypothermia. Granted, a world-class athlete like Kostner can withstand the initial shock for a few minutes, but her thin, sparkly leotard will do little to protect her from the deep and frigid water below the ice.” At press time, crews were attempting another dive after initial efforts had only managed to recover a sequined headband and several loose rhinestones.

The amazing new vocabulary list:
  • commutative property
  • associative property
  • identity property- when the number stays the same after an operation (it keeps its identity)
  • zero property- when the answer becomes zero
  • distributive property- breaking a problem into smaller bits:  48 x 5 = (40 x 5) + (8 x 5)
  • inverse operation-  The inverse of x is ÷ and the inverse of + is -
  • numerical expression- e.g.:  1 + 2
  • algebraic expression- e.g.: a + 2
  • variable- a letter used in an expression; the unknown
  • outline- specifically, a Harvard outline (you can Google it!)
  • evaluate- find the value of an expression
  • hypothermia- a condition of having not enough heat
  • rhinestones- fake diamonds used on a costume
  • sequin- a shiny thing sewn onto a costume
  • axel- a spin maneuver done by a figure skater
  • leotard- what is worn by a gymnast or figure skater

The Week: 2/10 - 2/14

Snow Day Monday!

No School Monday!
Sleep In Monday!
Need something to do?

READ!
(I'll give a ten Schneiderbuck bonus to the class fund for every 1/2 Reading Log turned in by Friday morning!)

LEARN!
Get a jump start on coordinate graphing by watching these videos.  I'll give five Schneiderbucks to the class fund for every video that each of you watch, but only if you bring a note signed by a parent!

CREATE!
Practice your dialogue writing skills by creating a story to go with the following dialogue.  Remember the five rules for quotations (Google it if you forgot)!  As a bonus, I'll add much needed Schneiderbucks to the class fund as follows and give you the same amount:
  • $10 for completing a story.
  • $50 for no errors in the dialogue conventions (the five rules).
  • $50 for the most creative story.
  • $25 for the second-most creative story.
  • $10 for the third-most creative story.
The dialogue (Create your own characters, setting and plot!):

A: Oh, no!
B:  What is it?
A:  Look over there.
B:  Over where?
A:  Don't you see it.  You must be blind!
B:  Oh, that!  I was distracted by the unicorn.
A:  Watch out for that pile of glitter.
B:  I may have stepped in some.
A:  We should go now.
B:  You're right

Still need something to do?  Watch this space for more challenges.

MYBH...
Thursday's MYBH is something you asked for.  You'll need Thursday's math notes to complete it, or you could just look online for help.  Click here for the instructions!  If you like that, you may also like the Unicorn Battle game.

This is what a SIX looks like!

For the curious among you, here is a model of what I'm building right now.  I showed you a piece this morning.  Here's what it (hopefully) looks like assembled.
